I'm trying to go back to school in order to return to work in a sedentary field. I have chosen the field of medical coding because it is a rapidly growing field with a good future to it. Also, the pay is good and there is a chance that I will be able to work from home in the future. I know of one hospital system here that is setting their coders up to work from their homes.
I've spent a good portion of the afternoon and early evening on the 'net trying to find out if it will be worth my time to take the training offered by a local community college. I like their training because it is all online. The only class I may have to take at the college is remedial math. All the other courses, including the medical terminology and anatomy and physiology courses are done online. This will help me as I need to be available to watch my two youngest granddaughters while my daughter is in school herself. She has her classes set for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so I will take my math class on Tuesday and Thursday. That will only be one semester then all mine will be online.
The fun thing was that both websites that I checked out, those of the organizations that do the certification testing, don't list the college I want to attend. I do wonder if the ones they list pay them to be listed as I know that at least two of our community colleges here teach medical coding. I also know that there are many online programs for medical coding that the organizations don't list. I also found a website that has a medical coding discussion board but so far I haven't been able to actually post a question on the board! You're supposed to apply for membership but so far I haven't found where to apply. Very frustrating believe me. Both of the organizations offer online training a lot more money than I can come up with, one includes the books, the other doesn't.
